Abstract: Clothing represents one of the most significant components and symbolic forms accumulated and refined by human beings to produce meaning in communication with themselves and with their surrounding environment. Through it, humans moved beyond savagery, tamed nature, and invented culture and science. Clothing is thus a language—a semiotic behavior—in which people have inscribed their meanings, geographical and cultural affiliations, as well as their attitudes and emotions. To consider clothing as a language from a semiotic perspective means that semiotics assumes the task of providing mechanisms for uncovering meaning within this language. This raises several questions: What justifies the possibility of approaching clothing semiotically? What makes clothing a semiotic sign? What can costumes add to cinema? And in what sense can they refer to cultural identity within the cinematic context?
Within this framework, this paper seeks to address these questions by proposing analytical approaches for a semiotic reading of the costumes employed in the film Boutfounast (story and dialogue by Raïs Mohammed Abaamrane; screenplay and direction by Mohammed Salout and Akram Archach).
