Abstract:
This sociological Research Paper to analyze the phenomenon of pet ownership in Morocco, with a particular focus on cats and dogs, as a cultural and social manifestation reflecting profound transformations in intimacy, identity, and social representations. The study seeks to understand how this phenomenon reshapes traditional social relations and highlights symbolic conflicts between tradition and modernity.
It also examines the role of animals as mediators in negotiating affection and meaning within the Moroccan urban context. The research adopts a critical approach through a careful discourse analysis of multiple sources, including official reports, press articles, and public debates, which allowed for a nuanced exploration of the various representations of the phenomenon within its social and class-based context.
The findings reveal that pet ownership represents more than a sentimental bond; it is a mirror of shifting intimacies in an era of individualization and a space of symbolic contestation between traditional and modern references. The study further shows the emergence of a parallel economy centered around pets, reflecting clear class disparities, where animals serve as a means of self-expression and social distinction. Within this framework, the phenomenon of “inverse anthropomorphism” emerges as a cultural process that reconfigures tenderness and emotion in human–animal relations. This phenomenon thus constitutes a fertile field for future sociological inquiry, especially in light of ongoing cultural and social tensions in Moroccan society.
Keywords: pet ownership – intimacy – inverse anthropomorphism – modernization and symbolic conflict – pet economy – social identity – individualization – cultural representations.
