Turkey, in addition to being a century-old state, has a deep historical background within the Islamic world. Possessing significant experience in Islamic sciences—especially in the field of Sīrah (the biography of the Prophet Muhammad)—the country derives its heritage from the Ottoman Empire on which it was founded, its originality from its internal dynamism, and its methodology partly from the West or from contemporary states.
The Ottoman scholars, who remained closely connected to the classical Islamic tradition, aimed to inform the public and convey the life of the Prophet to wider audiences by writing various works on Sīrah. In this era, narratives in the form of stories and legends (qissa and manqaba) were preferred, and topics such as battles (ghazwāt), expeditions (sariyya), virtues of the Prophet (manāqib), prophetic signs (dalā’il), characteristics (shamā’il), and specific features (khaṣā’iṣ) were given particular importance.
Although Arabic was the language of education and most works were written in Arabic, some texts were also composed in Turkish, and progress was made in translating foundational sources into Turkish. After a long period of recovering from the trauma of the Treaty of Karlowitz (1110/1699), a defensive rhetoric against the West began to develop, but the resulting works were often inadequate in terms of style, content, and substance.
With the Republican era, efforts toward modernization and Westernization led to the establishment of Sīrah studies on an academic foundation. Authors of the Republican period aimed to appeal to a broader segment of society by blending religious teachings with historical facts. This deep experience in Islamic sciences and Sīrah has positioned Turkey as an important scientific center both in the Islamic world and globally. Therefore, this study will focus on the momentum gained in the field of Sīrah in the Anatolian basin, the works produced, and their nature and types. For this purpose, the Ottoman experience will first be examined, followed by a discussion of the studies conducted in Turkey in a way that allows for comparison.
