Abstract:
The study aimed to explore the nature of the relationship between mathematics teachers’ instructional practices and students’ attitudes toward learning mathematics at the secondary stage. The researcher employed the descriptive correlational method and applied the study instruments, which included: a questionnaire on mathematics teachers’ instructional practices, a scale measuring students’ attitudes toward learning mathematics—both developed by the researcher—and a classroom observation guide to directly observe teaching practices in actual classrooms. The study sample consisted of 90 participants, distributed as follows: 70 mathematics teachers and 100 secondary school students, selected using the cluster random sampling method.
The findings revealed that mathematics teachers’ instructional practices were generally high, with the communication dimension showing the highest scores. Students’ attitudes were found to be moderate, leaning more toward cognitive positivity than emotional. Furthermore, the study indicated a significant positive correlation between teachers’ instructional practices and students’ attitudes toward learning mathematics. It also found statistically significant differences in instructional practices in favor of teachers with higher experience and academic qualifications. Additionally, significant differences were observed in students’ attitudes in favor of female students and those with higher academic achievement.
