Abstract:
Babylonian-Persian relations in the Neo-Babylonian era (626-539 BC) witnessed a clear fluctuation of the two parties, due to the different policy of the rulers who took over the rule and the increasing tension of relations between them, sometimes heading towards alliance and other times to conflict and military wars.
The reason for these disputes is attributed to the control of the eastern sections because of the commercial importance they represent for the Babylonian and Persian states, especially the Babylonian state, which was in dire need of the raw materials in it on the one hand, in addition to the fact that the Persians had tightened their control over those trade routes on the other hand.
It seems from the course of events that the Babylonians, since the establishment of their state, aspired to expand at the expense of the Assyrian state in the north, and they also realized the aspirations of the Persian king to lose control of the north, so they allied with him against the Assyrian state to ensure the extension of their influence in those regions, and indeed this was done for them during the reign of Nabopolassar when he was able to occupy Assyria and annex it to his influence.
Nebuchadnezzar II continued to follow his mother’s policy of establishing friendly relations with the Persians, which enabled him to achieve numerous victories over his enemies.
