This study examines the relationship between intellectual disability in children and the mental health of their parents through an analytical review of previous studies that explored the psychological pressures and emotional challenges associated with caring for children with developmental disabilities.
The study adopts a comparative analytical approach to the findings of multiple studies conducted across different cultural and social contexts, aiming to identify the factors related to the deterioration or improvement of parents’ mental health.
The results indicate that the severity of the disability is positively correlated with higher levels of anxiety and depression, and that mothers are more prone to psychological distress than fathers due to their greater caregiving responsibilities and family duties.
The reviewed studies also show that as children grow older, the intensity of parental stress tends to decrease, in line with the child’s increasing independence and the availability of social support. Furthermore, rehabilitation programs were found to have a dual positive effect: they enhance the children’s cognitive abilities while reducing the parents’ psychological strain. The study emphasizes the importance of adopting comprehensive family interventions that address both the needs of children and the well-being of their parents.
Keywords: intellectual disability, mental health, anxiety, depression, rehabilitation programs.
